Concrete demands for more climate protection on political parties negotiating formation of new government
Varel, 7.11.2017. In a broad alliance of 50 large and medium-sized companies as well as business associations, Papier- und Kartonfabrik Varel (PKV) calls on the parties in the exploratory talks to make climate protection the central task of the future federal government. In their appeal published today, companies are calling for climate protection and transition in the energy branch, as well as the implementation of the 2050 climate change plan, to be made part of Germany's modernization program.
"It is important that also from the economy an impulse is set and expectations are formulated." explains Kristian Evers (shareholder) the motivation for the PKV to participate in the action. "Not all required measures are easy to implement for us as a company. Some issues are major challenges, but it is our obligation to participate actively in the discourse and identify opportunities and risks, which need to be considered from our point of view."
"A pioneering role in climate protection is a great opportunity for the innovative strength and competitiveness of our economy," says the statement, which is issued on Thursday as an ad in a national newspaper. "The upcoming governing coalition should therefore increase the speed of the transformation towards a greenhouse gas-neutral economy and seek close cooperation with European and international partners." With the help of clever state frameworks, the energy-intensive industry, which competes internationally, can also drive forward its transformation and maintain its competitiveness.
"For us as an energy-intensive company, the success of the energy turnaround is a central concern," emphasizes Kristian Evers. "As a company with a non-stop 24h/7 day production and high energy requirements, we are predestined to be part of a successful overall concept. The instant consumption of overproduction of renewable energy is always more efficient than buffering it. For future investments in innovative technology we need a stable framework and robust planning conditions!"
Companies with more than 450,000 employees in Germany
Together, the companies have more than 450,000 employees in Germany alone and a global turnover of more than 350 billion EUR (more than the German federal budget 2017). Coordinators of the declaration are the business associations Stiftung 2 ° and B.A.U.M. as well as the development and environmental organization Germanwatch.
Signatories of the declaration are large corporations, mid-sized companies and associations from a wide range of industries in Germany, including 6 DAX 30 corporations and many well-known names. Even energy-intensive industrial companies as ours and energy suppliers with coal-fired power plants support the appeal. Many of the underwriting companies are not immediate winners of decarbonisation or energy transition. However, the draftsmen are ready to make their contribution to climate protection.
